Speed Diva's Racing for the Cure
When the girls started talking about wearing PINK this weekend my stomach turned and I felt sick. PINK, in my opinion, is a detestable color EXCEPT when it is PINK for a cause. So when they said we were racing to bring awareness to Breast Cancer I chugged some pepto bismal ( the most disgusting shade of Pink on the planet!) and said, “LET’S DO IT!!!”
I lost my Grandmother to breast cancer just before heading over to World Champs in 2005. Pretty much everyone I know has a direct link to a person who has been affected by this life threatening disease. Great news is it doesn’t have to be a death sentence. With so much support huge headway has been made medically and in educating people to understand the importance of early detection. I believe we are winning the fight against Breast Cancer.
There are so many initiatives but one I have chosen to support is the Florida Breast Health initiative soon to be Women’s Breast Health initiative because they grown to the point of going global!! CNN Hero Andrea Ivory has such an amazing story of what survival is all about. She didn’t just get to live to see another day she has committed herself to giving countless other women the same opportunity by knocking on one door at a time. To check out her full story here.
Florida has really become my home and everyone showed love at Florida Relays this past weekend where the Speed Diva’s brought the house down with a Stadium record. I haven’t been to Texas relays in a while but the last time I was there I also apart of a record breaking relay as a part of team South Florida Elite.
Speed Diva’s are eyeing the record and I am excited to be apart of a team that certainly has the talent to do it but the main thing this time of year is just to get out there and have a good time and remain healthy. I probably shouldn’t release such valuable information because I am sure our competitors want to strategize about how they can get to the finish-line first but my team is myself, Shalonda Solomon, Bianca Knight and Marshevet Myers...all I can say is OMG!!!!
If you’re attending or watching via FloTrack look for us in the PINK knee socks. I even painted my nails pink and am looking for something I can put in my hair as well.
I would love to discover some other ways the sprint world can mesh building awareness to really do something BIG for such a great cause in the future. If your unable to tune in I will keep you posted if your following me on twitter @LaurynCwilliams
saw you at the Texas Relays
