Lauryn Williams: World Champion and Olympian

Guadeloupe

I said I was going to do better about my blogging this year...

I always tell others "don't talk about it, be about it" I have to do better.

This weekend marked the official opening of track season... well at least in my eyes. Nothing matters until the 1st week of May in my opinion. Everything prior to is referred to as preseason thought it isn't written in a track manual anywhere... wait there is no track manual.

Anyway I competed in Guadalupe this weekend, that's in the French West Indies in case you were wondering. I had to look at a map J). It was my first time there and I must say I was impressed! I had a Caribbean favorite salt fish, it is hard to describe but my dad used to make it all the time and it was so nice getting a taste of a dish I hadn't had in quite some time. The pictures you see...they are the reason I love my job. What other form of employment requires you to travel and stay in a room with a view like that? The hardest thing about the perks though, is facing the meet promoter after you haven't performed so well and feel less than worthy of all you have been given. That is exactly what happened this weekend I was treated like the favorite and performed like a flop. 11.38 for a 4th place finish...not exactly what I had in mind. I stumbled out of the blocks, panicked and stood right up. You don't succeed in a race that caliber without proper acceleration. I didn't beat myself up too much though as my body felt great and I think I am ready for a good performance in the absence of the stumble. I am looking forward to a week without travel to regroup and prepare to Adidas meet in California. Talk to you soon!

Athletes Making a Difference

Sunday we had an outing for my mentoring program. Due to some difficulty planning we opted for a FREE carwash as our community service project. Washing the cars of those in the community who were interested in a location that is near a busy road sounds simple enough right? Well you’re wrong!!! I had no idea there is no demand for a free carwash especially in a recession who doesn’t want something for free!! Then came the rain, talk about damping spirits. Still, we had good intentions and the kids had a great time washing the cars (even though they belonged to those present) and I have definitely learned to always look for the brighter side of things. One of the bright sides is the one person who did stop. Imagine the Children’s excitement when what we thought was our first real customer pulled up in a white Bentley!!! The window descended only to reveal Penny Hardaway was the driver just stopping by to give us a donation though he didn’t have time for a carwash. We explained that this was a free carwash as a community service project, so no donation necessary. Yet he still wanted to donate to the Organization! what an example to show both the student athletes and the middle school children that no matter who you are or where you are going that you can make time to stop and care about someone else. I am very appreciative to Mr. Hardaway for reinforcing the idea of remaining grounded even when blessed abundantly.
